CMS Releases 2021 Overall Hospital Quality Star Ratings, Ohio Ranks 2nd in Country for 5-Star Hospitals

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Wednesday updated its annual Overall Hospital Quality Star Rankings for 2021. Ohio ranks second for the most 5-star hospitals in the country behind California. Of the 134 Ohio hospitals in the rankings, 35 are rated in the top category, while California had 39. Ohio ranks third for the most 4-star hospitals in the country with 57 behind California (62) and Texas (82).

CMS rated over 4,500 hospitals from one to five stars, with five representing the highest quality rating. Of 4,586 hospitals, 13.5%, or 455 hospitals, received five stars. The star rating system assigns stars based on 48 measures in five categories. Learn more about the ratings here.
