Ohio House Minority Leader Emilia Strong Sykes (D-Akron) on Oct. 28 held safe sleep events at Akron Children’s Hospital, Akron General Hospital and Summa Health Systems in Akron. Sykes toured the facility's neonatal intensive care unit, held safe sleep discussions and delivered "This Side Up" onesies provided by OHA to help remind new parents to always place babies in the crib on their backs.
OHA in 2014 launched the Good4Baby initiative with one of the key focus areas being safe sleep. In Ohio each year, more than 15 % of infant deaths are sleep related. The American Academy of Pediatrics and the Ohio Department of Health recommend that all infants sleep alone, on their backs and in a crib every time they are placed to sleep.
OHA's Safe Sleep is Good4Baby is a comprehensive strategy focused on collaboration and community engagement. The Safe Sleep program promotes the best practices for hospitals and Ohio families.
