Ohio Reports First Human Case of Bird Flu, Risk to Public Remains Low
February 14, 2025
The Ohio Department of Health has reported the state’s first probable human case of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza in a Mercer County farm worker who had contact with deceased poultry. While the CDC considers the risk to the general public low, officials urge those working with birds to follow biosecurity protocols and avoid unprotected contact with sick or dead poultry. Best practices for poultry workers include proper hygiene, limiting visitor access, and monitoring flocks for illness.
Ohioans should report sick or dead birds to state agencies and contact health care providers if they develop respiratory symptoms after exposure. Find more information here.
