Hospital Leader, State Official, National Coalition to Receive Association’s Annual Leadership Awards
Columbus, Ohio – 43215 – In recognition of National Hospital Week, May 12-18, the Ohio Hospital Association today announced the honorees of its annual leadership awards, including:
Michael Canady, MD, MBA, CPE, FACS, FAAPL, FACHE (Gallipolis), CEO (retired), Holzer Health System will receive OHA’s Donald R. Newkirk Award. The award is named for Don Newkirk who led OHA for 27 years and recognizes an individual who has made a significant lifetime contribution to the health care profession in Ohio.
Maureen Corcoran (Columbus) director, Ohio Department of Medicaid, will receive OHA’s James R. Castle Distinguished Service Award, which honors an individual whose professional attainments embody qualities of an outstanding leader or mentor for service to the health care community. This award is named for OHA’s president and CEO for 23 years, from 1989 through 2011.
Coalition to Strengthen America’s Healthcare (Bethesda, MD) will receive OHA’s Dr. Eli Crew Community Service Excellence Award. This award recognizes an individual’s or organization’s support of the health care industry. The award is named in honor of Dr. Eli R. Crew, former superintendent of Dayton’s Miami Valley Hospital and OHA’s first president. In 1914, he led Ohio hospital administrators to an organizational meeting at Cedar Point, Sandusky where OHA was founded.

About Dr. Canady (photo)
Michael Canady, MD, MBA, CPE, FACS, FAAPL, FACHE, served as Holzer Health System’s chief executive officer from 2016 to 2023. Prior to being named CEO, he served as chief medical officer for the health system. He joined the Holzer team as chairman of the surgery department in 1996, serving for 11 years. He later served as surgical services director for the entire system for more than two years. Canady joined Holzer in 1995 following four years of service in the United States Navy.
Canady joined the OHA Board of Trustees in 2019. He served as board chair in 2023, chair-elect in 2022 and as the secretary and treasurer in 2021.
He is a graduate of the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, Winston-Salem, North Carolina; completed his bachelor’s in science from Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee; and completed a residency in General Surgery at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Canady earned an MBA from the Ohio University College of Business in 2001, became a Certified Physicians Executive in 2014 through the American Association of Physician Leadership Certifying Commission of Medical Management Program, and became a Fellow to the American Association for Physician Leadership in 2019. Canady and his wife, Kim, reside in Gallipolis.
Holzer Health System is a not-for-profit regional health system consisting of two hospital locations in Gallipolis and Jackson, Ohio; multiple clinical locations; a comprehensive therapy and wellness center; a dental care facility; a variety of long-term care entities including senior care and assisted living establishments in Jackson and Gallipolis; over 160 providers and more than 30 medical specialties and over 2,500 employees.

In January 2019, Governor Mike DeWine appointed Maureen Corcoran to assume responsibility as the Director of Medicaid. During her time in this role, the department has undertaken an ambitious agenda to support Governor Mike DeWine’s goal to advance the potential of all Ohioans, focusing on children and youth with complex behavioral health needs as his priority. Under his leadership, Corcoran has led an ambitious agenda to restructure the state’s fifteen-year-old managed care program, introducing a person-centric, population health approach to healthcare.
Prior to joining the DeWine Administration, Corcoran was the President and Founder of Vorys Health Care Advisors, a healthcare policy consulting firm.
Previous public service included two prior stints in Ohio state government as the Assistant Deputy and Acting Deputy for Medicaid at Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services, Deputy Director of Ohio Department of Mental Health, Human Services Policy Advisor to Governor Richard Celeste, and Chief of the Office of Healthcare Cost Containment policy for Ohio Department of Health. Corcoran has been honored regionally and nationally in the fields of behavioral health and intellectual and developmental disabilities. Her education and professional experience include clinical nursing and healthcare finance.
